SCE and the Plain English Campaign

In an effort to improve the clarity, vocabulary and expression of its publications HQ SCE has asked the Plain English Campaign to review a number of the HQ’s latest documents, including leaflets about School Governance Committees,  Managing Medicines and Complaints Procedures.

If the trial is successful and helps to  improve the clarity of its communications HQ SCE will be able to display the Plain English Campaign’s Crystal Mark on those publications that the Plain English Campaign endorses.

Derby School may be closing soon but it's still on "TASC"

Year 7 & 8s enjoyed the results of all their hard work in the kitchen! Unfortunately, they also had to do the washing up!

A successful three days work was undertaken at Derby school just before breaking up for the May half-term.  In anticipation of most of pupils, and many staff, returning to the UK, the school spent the time investigating ‘The Best of British’ using the underlying principles of the Thinking Activity in a Social Context (TASC) wheel – which aims to help pupils to develop independent thinking skills and methods of working. Images of Britain, fashion, landmarks, cities and food were the general themes introduced to the students.  Working in groups pupil had a variety of challenges to achieve using the TASC process, with the aim of encouraging them to think and work as a real team, not a group of individuals working alongside each other.

Year 4, who had been using the TASC wheel for some time, took the challenge of ‘Best of British – Fashion’ in their stride!  They organised their groups, analysed the challenge, made a plan and carried it out, evaluating progress and making some adjustments as they went along.  A wide range of fashion ideas to show pride in nationality were forthcoming!

Year 7 and Year 8 found the process a challenge.  Although they had all used the TASC wheel to plan essays in history, the broader context of producing a typically British meal and a promotional video for a city proved more difficult!  The issue was working as a team and planning effectively – too many chiefs and not enough Indians in some ways!

It was an exciting three days – not just for the students but for staff too.  A vibrant celebration assembly demonstrated to all just how much had been achieved.

A number of schools are taking TASC on board; it puts the strategies for thinking and learning into a really manageable form.
