Windsor School Students Plan and Deliver Successful Enterprise Activities

Alexander Fleming, a BTEC Work Skills student, single-handedly undertook a successful enterprise event at Windsor School in February.  He developed the idea of opening a Pizza Shop over lunchtime at Windsor School, putting careful thought into the research and planning required.  Alexander surveyed students at the school to make informed choices about whether his enterprise idea was likely to be successful and learnt which pizzas would be most popular. Salami, Ham & Mushroom and Vegetarian Pizzas were top of the list. Alexander designed his own advertising poster which was displayed around the school. He bought ingredients, keeping account of his spending and planned to make the pizzas himself under the watchful eye of Sharon Rigg who works in the Food Technology Department at Windsor School.

On the day, Alexander reminded students that Pizzas were on sale by making announcements over the tannoy system and reminders appeared on the display screens in Year Areas.   Alexander served his pizzas to over 50 customers and, at the end of lunchtime had only one pizza left.  Karen Clark (Deputy Head Teacher at Windsor School) commented that, having taken into account expenditure and income, 30% profit was a clear indication that Alexander’s Enterprise Event had been a success.

Alexander has understood and demonstrated the responsibility, commitment and skills required in business.   He will be leaving Windsor School in February, to begin his army training.  We hope he will be able to continue to be successful in his chosen career.

Four more students have also organised an Enterprise Event.  On 22 March, they hosted a profit-making Spring Disco at Windsor School which went down extremely well with the students in Key Stage 3. The students took on the challenge to devise an event which supported two units of their course - Planning an Enterprise Activity and Running an Enterprise Activity.  Considering costings in order to produce a budget, planning in detail and carrying out a thorough risk assessment was just the start.

Prior to the event, the students also had to utilise their sales and promotion skills to ensure there would be a good turn out.  One resourceful student was brave enough to suggest a novel way to advertise the event.  Dressed as an Easter rabbit on the day, Craig Doig certainly caught the students’ attention, not to mention to that of drivers who saw him walking home along Queen’s Avenue.

The students did an excellent job setting up and hosting the event.  They had everyone up on the dance floor all evening including joining in with karaoke. Spot prizes were awarded by the proud organisers.

Course leader, Karen Clark stated that, whilst profits were relatively small (€65.77), big benefits were reaped by the students in relation to communication, organisation, marketing and finance skills.  Having this opportunity to explore enterprise within an educational framework enables students to acquire skills and experience which will be valued in the world of work.

Talking to the students after the event, she discovered that all four had not expected to enjoy the evening as much as they had.  The satisfaction they derived gave them the confidence and motivation to host a similar event in future.  If Craig decides to dress up next time, traffic alerts are being considered! Well done to Dominic Roberts, Orville Lindsay, Liam Atkinson and, of course, to Craig.
